Dr Rangin Dadfar Spanta has been Minister of Foreign Affairs in Afghanistan since 2 May, 2006. In the mid-1970s, Dr. Spanta took a Bachelor of Science degree in International Relations in Turkey. In the wake of the Soviet invasion of his native Afghanistan, he settled in Germany in 1982. Foreign Minister Spanta earned a Master’s degree in Political Science, Sociology and International Relations and a PhD from Aachen University in Political Science where he was a professor from 1992 to 2005. In January 2005, Dr. Spanta returned to teach at Kabul University and later became advisor on foreign affairs to President Hamid Karzai.
