A G5 for Africa? Exploring Club Governance in the Continent
African international institutions rely on consensus in most decision-making procedures – with potential negative consequences for the resolution of African peace and security issues. Could an African G5 prove more effective in finding lasting solutions to Africa’s challenges?

African Peacekeeping in Somalia: Exception or Future Norm?
The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) represents a very different kind of ‘peacekeeping’ mission than is generally envisaged in African Union policies and plans. It is, in reality much more of an anti-insurgency stabilization mission, similar to NATO’s role in Afghanistan, than it is a peacekeeping mission. Is AMISOM a short-lived exception or does it represent the kind of missions that Africa is likely to be called upon to undertake in future?
Presenter: Henri Boshoff, Head Peace Missions Programme, ISS
Moderator: Cedric de Coning, NUPI and ACCORD
