[10.03.09] Against the Gathering Storm
The Norwegian Institute of International Affairs [NUPI] has the great pleasure of inviting you to the presentation of the Chatham House-report:
Against the Gathering Storm: Securing Sudan’s Comprehensive Peace Agreement
Dr. Edward Thomas
Civilians in all regions of Sudan face a serious risk of renewed violence and conflict if the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) fails. The CPA was signed on 9 January 2005 by Sudan's National Congress Party-led central government and the Southern-based Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army, ending more than two decades of war. On the fourth anniversary of its signing, the CPA is at a critical juncture. Elections are due in 2009, and they will set the stage for a referendum on self-determination for Southern Sudan in 2011.
Programme, 13.00 – 14.30:
- Presentation of the report by Dr. Edward Thomas
- Comments by Øystein H. Rolandsen, International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO)
- Trude Falch, Norwegian Peoples' Aid (NPA)
Edward Thomas holds a PhD in the History of Sudan and has worked for the United Nations in Sudan, and with UNICEF in Khartoum as a child protection advicer and teacher.
