From the perspective of Euro-Atlantic Integration Albania is considered a success as it obtained NATO membership in 2009 and has shown some progress towards EU membership. However, under this surface the situation is increasingly concerning as the executive power in the country has extended its control over the last two-three years. The opposition has been weakened in heatedly contested elections that have been criticized by international observers.
