Challenges Facing Africa's Sahel Region
The Sahel Region stretches from the Atlantic Ocean eastward through northern Senegal, southern Mauritania, the great bend of the Niger River in Mali, Burkina Faso, southern Niger, north-eastern Nigeria, south-central Chad, and into the Sudan.

Mr. Amadou Toumani Touré won the presidential elections in 2002 and assumed office 8 June 2002 with a broad coalition of support. In 2007 he won a second five-year term in the first-round presidential elections. Mr Amadou Toumani Touré became the special envoy of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to the Central African Republic after the failed coup attempt in June 2001.
