[22.01.10] Conceptual Histories: A Comparison
Forskerseminar i regi av Avdeling for internasjonal politikk:
Conceptual Histories: A Comparison
Paul Petzschmann, NUPI & Oxford University
Paul Petzschmann's paper will argue that political theory and the history of political thought could help in shedding some light on the history of IR theory.
It will explore the relevance of Carl J. Friedrich, Ernst Fraenkel and a few less well-known figures on the intellectual milieu that also spawned some of the founding fathers of International Relations. The experience of migration and of being intellectuels engagés in Germany during the interwar period are crucial for understanding the concepts dominant in this milieu and the methodological outlook of their representatives. They should make us question the “American” credentials of International Relations as well as the assumption of an “idealist” inter-war period. In order to access these writings and understand them in the context in which they were written it is useful to be aware of some of the methods political theorists have used to analyse texts.
Paul Petzschmann will therefore preface his remarks by giving a summary of different kinds of conceptual history and ideological analysis used today.
