Recently extensive corruption and civil war have been proposed as major causes of development failure. Both are closely related to the ways states operate. They have both recently been brought into the orbits of economic analysis, but as separate lines of research. As we explore the two fields, we raise Huntington's forty years' old question of whether they to some extent may be explained by shared mechanisms?
