The responsibility to protect civilians at risk of grave atrocities was endorsed by the 2005 UN World Summit. Professor Thomas G. Weiss is one of the creators of The Global Centre for The Responsibility to Protect. NUPI has been appointed its European Associated Centre and Weiss is visiting Norway on this occasion.

Thomas G. Weiss is Presidential Professor of Political Science at The CUNY Graduate Center and Director of the Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies, where he is co-director of the United Nations Intellectual History Project. He was awarded the “Grand Prix Humanitaire de France 2006,” is chair of the Academic Council on the UN System (ACUNS), president of the International Studies Association (ISA) and has written or edited some 35 books on international relations. He was editor of Global Governance (2000-5) and research director of the International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty (2000-2).

 

The Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect has been created by key supporters from government, NGOs, and academia to ensure that the R2P doctrine is understood and put into practice by governments and at the United Nations. Its mission is to promote and catalyze international action to help countries to prevent or halt mass atrocities. The Global Centre is housed at the Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies at The CUNY Graduate Center and will begin operations early in 2008. For more information: www.globalcentrer2p.org
