Peace building and reintegration: key challenges

 

Three leading scholars on civil war, disarmament and peace building; David Keen, Robert Muggah and Kathleen Jennings will give presentations. Sudan, Liberia and Haiti will be among the country cases discussed and NUPI director Jan Egeland will give an introductory comment.

David Keen is Professor of Complex Emergencies at the LSE and has been central in furthering new understandings of violence and economic agendas in contemporary civil wars. His most recent book is Endless War?: Hidden functions of the ‘War on Terror’.

 

Robert Muggah is Research Director at the Geneva based Small Arms Survey and Global Security and Cooperation Professional Fellow (SSRC) at Queen Elizabeth House University of Oxford. He is currently directing the Small Arms Survey comprehensive field based mapping of human security in Sudan. Recent publications include the edited book: No refuge – the crisis of refugee militarization in Africa.

 

Kathleen Jennings is Research Fellow at FAFO and holds extensive field work experience from Liberia and Haiti. Recent publications include ‘Unclear ends, unclear means: Reintegration in postwar societies--The case of Liberia’ forthcoming in Global Governance and ‘The struggle to satisfy: DDR through the eyes of Ex-Combatants in Liberia’ International Peacekeeping , vol. 14, no. 2

 

The seminar is arranged in conjunction with the launch of the NUPI/University of Tromsø research project: ‘the political economy of DDR’, which is financed by the Norwegian Research Council Poverty and Peace programme.
