- The East African Standby Brigade ( EASBRIG ) is one of five regional brigades designated by the African Union (AU) to together form the African Standby Force (ASF). According to deadlines set by the AU, EASBRIG – like the other regional brigades of the ASF – should have at least interim operating capacity by 30 Jun 2010 to conduct the full range of mandated tasks, including observer missions, peacekeeping missions, complex multidimensional peace support operations, and interventions in case of genocide or humanitarian crisis.
- Members of EASBRIG include Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda: Burundi has also applied to be a member.
- The EASBRIG Coordination Mechanism (EASBRIGCOM) was established on 30 March 2007, following a decision two months earlier by the Assembly of East African Heads of State and Government to create a new independent body to act as the political secretariat of EASBRIG, replacing IGAD which had previously served in this function.
- Simon Mulongo (Uganda) was chosen as EASBRIGCOM’s first Director. EASBRIGCOM is co-located with EASBRIG’s Planning Element in Karen, Nairobi. The Standby Brigade Headquarters Element is located in Addis Ababa, as will be the proposed Logistics Base.
