UN and the Arab Spring

The UN Department of Political Affairs (DPA) has increasingly become an operational unit which is engaged in preventive diplomacy, active mediation efforts and that provides rapid response to political crises and implement policy operations. DPA is thus an important player in crisis and transition processes, as those now unfolding in the North Africa and the Middle East.

Mr Lynn Pascoe  assumed the post of Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs on 1 March 2007. He was appointed by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Before joining the United Nations, Mr. Pascoe was a US diplomat.

Mr. Jan Egeland is the former Director of NUPI. In august 2011 he assumed the position as Europe Deputy Executive Director of Human Rights Watch. From 2003 - 2006 he was the UN Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator.
