[19.06.09] Women and violence
The Norwegian Institute of International Affairs [NUPI] has the great pleasure of inviting you to a seminar
Women and violence – from UN resolutions to practice
Dr. Asha-Rose Migiro, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations
UN Security Council Resolutions 1325 (2000) on Women, Peace and Security and 1820 (2008) against sexual violence in war and conflict have received widespread acceptance and donor support. Nevertheless, ensuing efforts have generally involved the advocacy level, with less at the practical or operational level. This seminar focuses on how the UN can operationalize 1325 and 1820, using case examples from a range of UN missions. Improving gender equality and the empowerment of women is central for member countries to reach the goals of resolutions 1325 and 1820. Key areas such as the UN’s rights for equal rights will be discussed as possible entry points to tackling practical challenges in dealing with sexual and gender-based violence.
