The vision of a nuclear weapon-free world comes in several forms. Three of them are outlined and discussed with special emphasis on stability requirements. Reservations are made for the path dependency of nuclear disarmament: beyond some initial steps, the international political order may change in ways that defy prediction. However, much is known about the requirements of military stability. The article discusses how these requirements can be met on the way to abolition.
