>> Summary
In this groundbreaking book, Richard Wyn Jones traces the development of the political ideas of Plaid Cymru (the Party of Wales) from its foundation during the winter of 1924–25 up until the establishment of the National Assembly for Wales in the summer of 1999. Through an original and revealing study of the political ideas of its most important leaders – Saunders Lewis, Gwynfor Evans, Dafydd Elis-Thomas and Dafydd Wigley – we follow the party’s journey from the political margins to the dawn of the devolved Wales. Particular attention is given to the evolution of the party’s constitutional and economic as well as in its attitude towards the Welsh language. The study is based on an authoritative discussion of the nature of nationalism and nationalist thought, a discussion that allows the reader to locate Plaid Cymru’s intellectual development within a wider historical and comparative context.
