Internasjonalt samarbeid på det økonomiske felt blir i omfang og intensitet stadig viktigere og dermed en mer sentral del av utenrikspolitikken. Forskningen i Avdeling for internasjonal økonomi er bredt anlagt, med et hovedfokus på internasjonal handel og investeringer, teknologi og økonomisk vekst, fattigdom og korrupsjon.
Økonomisk vekst og teknologisk innovasjon er av økende betydning i avdelingens portefølje. Internasjonal handelspolitikk, inntektsulikhet og fattigdom, samt betydningen av faste kostnader ved eksport er temaer som har hatt prioritet.
