EFTA currently has an ambitious plan for negotiating free trade agreements (FTAs) with a number of new countries, including China, India, Ukraine and Russia. As an input into the discussion of Norway's priorities with respect to new FTAs, NUPI will estimate the potential trade increase if tariffs and other trade barriers for exports of goods are removed in a number of markets. We update a study undertaken by NUPI for the ministry in 2002-2004, constructing a new database with trade and tariffs for around 150 countries. Using a gravity model, the project will estimate on how trade depends on current trade barriers, and therefter use the results to predict how trade will change if barriers are removed.
