In the WTO negotiations it has been suggested to give preferential treatment for the services exports of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs). Such preferences would require a modification of WTO rules. Formerly, trade prefereneces for developing countries have been given for trade in goods under the so-called Generalised System of Preferences, dating from around 1970. Trade preferences for services is therefore a new concept, and their form as well ass economic impact is not yet clear. The project examines the possible forms of such preferences and the possible impact they might have on the services trade of developing countries, particularly the LDCs. For the LDCs, torism is of particular importance and an issue is whether these exports or other services exports could be promoted by trade preferences.
