Avdeling for internasjonal politikk (2001-) forsker på internasjonal og global politikk, governance, europeisk politikk og norsk utenriks-, sikkerhets- og forsvarspolitikk. Sentrale temaer og geografisk fokus er:
- Globalisering og globale styringsforsøk (global governance)
- Sikkerhetspolitikk og transatlantiske relasjoner
- Europeisk integrasjon
- Fredspolitikk og diplomati
- Militærmakt, sjørøveri, nedrustning/ikke-spredning av kjernevåpen
- Internasjonal terrorisme og radikalisering
- Europa, USA, Midtøsten
- IR-teori og metode
Avdelingen kombinerer grunnforskning med anvendt forskning gjennom langsiktige programmer (for eksempel EUPERFORM, 2010-2014; Manning the State, 2011-2013 og Hegemony and World Order, 2002-2008;) og mer policyrelevante FoU-prosjekter. Forskningen på globale styringsforsøk foregår primært under Centre for Global Governance, som er en del av avdelingen.
Avdelingen har et rikt nettverk av internasjonale og nasjonale samarbeidspartnere som deltar i løpende prosjekter, blant annet AGORA, Konsortiet for forskning på internasjonal kriminalitet og terrorisme og GR:EEN. Deltakelse i internasjonale forskerkonferanser, som ISA og ECPR, har høy prioritet for avdelingens medarbeidere.
For at forskningen også skal ha praktisk relevans for det offentlige ordskiftet om norsk utenrikspolitikk, organiserer avdelingen seminarer knyttet til prosjekter og publikasjoner. Avdelingen har en seminarrekke tilknyttet EUPERFORM. I tillegg til seminarer, formidles forskningen gjennom publikasjoner i fagtidsskrifter og populærvitenskapelige utgivelser.
