Accomodating Iran into the Middle East
The working hypothesis of this project is that “the Iranian problem” will not be solved unless Iran is better accommodated into the politics of the Middle East, and that a solution to the “nuclear problem” also depends on progress in this regard.Deltakere in association with Stina Torjesen (NUPI), Siri Merethe Neset and Matthew Bonham (Maxwell Institute, University of Syracuse, USA)
Iran wants to be recognized as a regional power in the wider Middle East. At the same time, it feels belittled and humiliated in the face of Western alliance-building and international sanctions against them. It is the working hypothesis of this project that “the Iranian problem” will not be solved unless Iran is better accommodated into the politics of the Middle East, and that a solution to the “nuclear problem” also depends on progress in this regard. A group of experts from the region and from major powers involved in Middle Eastern affairs will meet semiannually to discuss ways in which this might be done.
The project is a track II activity where participants contribute in their personal capacities. However, for some of the participants, the connections to their political authorities are both obvious and desirable. This way, we hope to facilitate the development of ideas while ensuring a fair degree of political realism in the discussions.
Finansiering
The project is funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
