[2010-]Towards NATO á la carte? NATOs Adaption to New Tasks and Changing Relations in a Multipolar World

This project examines whether NATO is about to become a security organization à la carte, engaging in security tasks on a case-by-case basis and alternately serving the interests of different member states, constellations and external partners.

At the summit in Lisbon 19-20 November 2010, NATO adopted a new strategic concept. The adoption of this new strategic concept marks the beginning of a new era for the alliance. The new concept, and the debates leading up to it, reflects different positions and practices among member states both concerning what NATO’s key tasks should be and how relational structures inside and outside the alliance should be organised.

This project will examine the timely question of whether NATO is developing into a security organisation ”à la carte”, engaging in security tasks on a case-by-case basis and alternately serving the interests of different member states, constellations and external partners. Furthermore, what are the implications of a NATO à la carte for Norwegian security and defence politics?

On 9 December 2010 NUPI hosted a discussion of the challenges facing NATO today.  Associate Professor Pål Sigurd Hilde from the Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies (IFS) and NUPI researchers Nina Græger, Jakub M. Godzimirski and Kristin M. Haugevik took part in the discussion at the seminar "NATO  á la carte? Muligheter og utfordringer for alliansen"
