In October 2009 Turkey and Armenia signed a historic agreement, bringing a relative normalisation to their diplomatic relations and leading to the opening of the border. This stands as an almost unique occurrence in a region marred by seemingly insurmountable conflicts or tension. Both sides have a lot to gain by this move. Armenia may benefit by the increased economic activity resulting from trade with Turkey, and Armenia will be far less dependent on Russia. Turkey, on the other hand, is about to remove an important obstacle to EU accession, and increase its influence in the Caucasus. Meanwhile, as of February 2010 it seems that the process that brought a lot of hope to the region has again been bogged down in the parliaments of Armenia and Turkey.
