The project is carried out in collaboration with senior analyst Joel Ng Kuang Jong at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore.

The project will provide research-based policy advice on how human rights norms influence security discourse and practice within the Association of East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the African Union (AU). Particular emphasis will be given to the impact of re-emerging powers in these regions. Through specific case studies, the project will assess the manner and degree to which human rights norms have impacted on decision-making and the formulation of regional responses to human rights violations.

Increased knowledge about the political processes and dynamics that surround the adaptation and implementation of human rights norms is particularly salient for Norwegian policy makers, given Norway’s principled and strategic foreign policy on human rights.

Finansiering

The project is funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
