The project explores the emergence, scope and expansion of for-profit companies in international peace operations. To what extent does the outsourcing of humanitarian and development services to commercial companies represent a breech with existing humanitarian traditions and principles? Is humanitarianism compatible with commercial interests? Arguably, governments, donors and NGOs are increasingly becoming parts of the same political project, due to the blurred lines between humanitarian relief, stabilisation operations, peace operations and more longer-term post-war reconstruction and state-building efforts.
