Filling the Gaping Hole
Judy Cheng-Hopkins gives her talk at a seminar on Monday 7 June, titled Filling the Gaping Hole - Getting the UN to Deliver Coherently on Peacebuilding.
Judy Cheng-Hopkins is the head of The Peacebuilding Support Office (PBSO). The Peacebuilding Support Office was established to assist and support the Peacebuilding Commission, administer the Peacebuilding Fund, and serve the Secretary-General in coordinating United Nations agencies in their peacebuilding efforts.
The UN Peacebuilding Commission is undergoing a strategic review in 2010. The review looks back at what the UN Peacebuilding Commission has achieved in the five years since it has been established, and raises the question of what needs to be done to further improve the peacebuilding architecture of the United Nations.
Although there seems to be general agreement that the Peacebuilding Commission is needed, it has been difficult to identify the added value of the Commission to date. Critical questions thus remain to be answered about what exactly it is that the Peacebuilding Commission contributes to the UN’s peace and security architecture, and what Member States, like Norway, can do to help the Peacebuilding Commission to realize its full potential.
