The UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) and the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) are facilitating a consultation on the field-based planning processes of UN Integrated Missions. The consultation will take place in Oslo on 3 and 4 February 2009, and is funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The purpose of the consultation is to capture best practices in field-based planning, coordination, and integration mechanisms for incorporation in planning guidelines that the UN is currently in the process of developing.

The consultation will bring approximately 30 participants together, including a number of Deputy Special Representatives, senior field-based mission planners, and members of the Integrated Mission Planning Process Working Group.

NUPI has worked with and supported UN DPKO over many years, especially with these kinds of knowledge development processes. Norway has also been especially active in the development of the Integrated Missions concept. NUPI produced an initial study on the concept Report on Integrated Missions and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has released the final report of its Multidimensional and Integrated Peace Operations project. (MFA report).
