Myriam Dunn Cavelty, lecturer and senior research fellow, Center for Security Studies (CSS)

As our societies grow increasingly wired and interconnected, out vulnerabilities also increase. As a result, there is a growing demand to enhance cyber security and an accompanying growing industry of cyber security providers. However, there is an inherent tension between freedom and security in internet and the wider cyberspace. Many of the means applied to combat organized crime, espionage and attacks on the net can also be used to curb freedom of expression and free trade. Are we giving up freedom in the pursue of security?

Myriam Dunn Cavelty's research focuses on the politics of risk and uncertainty in security politics and changing conceptions of (inter-)national security due to cyber issues (cyber-security, cyber-war, critical infrastructure protection) in specific. [More]
