Life on the Frontlines of American Diplomacy

The US and North Korea are on the brink of conflict. But what does North Korea really want? Is the country aiming for a new deal with the international community? NUPI has the pleasure of hosting Ambassador Christopher R. Hill, who was Head of the U.S. delegation in the 2005 negotiations for a nuclear deal with North Korea. Through his carreer, Hill has made a huge contribution to peace and diplomacy in some of the world's most vulnerable areas.

We still don't know how Trump's new foreign policy will develop, but it will undoubtingly make a mark on the world. We have the pleasure of hosting one of the US' most renowned diplomats, Ambassador Christopher R. Hill. Hill will share his experoences from the inside of American politics.

Hill's talk will draw on his recent book “Outpost” as a point of departure, sharing his experience as a US diplomat and giving some perspectives on US diplomacy and foreign policy and the role of the USA in important geopolitical issues today. Given the important role that Ambassador Hill had in the North Korea nuclear deal, he will also draw on that experience in his talk.

Ambassador Christopher Robert Hill is the Dean of the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at The University of Denver, a position he has held since September 2010.  In addition, Ambassador Hill is author of ‘Outpost: Life on the Frontlines of American Diplomacy: A Memoir’, a monthly columnist for Project Syndicate, and a highly sought public speaker and voice in the media on international affairs.

Ambassador Hill is a former career diplomat, a four-time ambassador, nominated by three presidents, whose last post was as Ambassador to Iraq.  Prior to Iraq, Hill served as Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs during which he was also the head of the US delegation to the Six Party Talks on the North Korean nuclear issue.  Earlier, He was the U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea.  Previously he served as U.S. Ambassador to Poland, Ambassador to the Republic of Macedonia and Special Envoy to Kosovo.  He also served as a Special Assistant to the President and a Senior Director on the staff of the National Security Council.

Ambassador Hill graduated from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine with a B.A. in Economics.  He received a Master's degree from the Naval War College in 1994.  He speaks Polish, Serbo-Croatian, and Macedonian.

The event will be moderated by NUPI Director, Ulf Sverdrup.
