A Nuclear Weapon-Free World:
Nuclear disarmament strategies, non-proliferation and export control

Recently, a number of important developments have taken place in the field of disarmament. They include the UN Security Council Summit of September 2009, where state leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a world without nuclear weapons, the Global Summit on Nuclear Security in Washington, the signing of the new US-Russian agreement on strategic offensive weapons, and the 2010 Review Conference of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). This meeting will assess recent progress and explore new steps forward.

Plenary session 1 (12.00–13.30)  Nuclear disarmament strategies
This panel will assess the contribution offered by the countries that have fully renounced nuclear weapons, and highlight the experiences linked to nuclear weapon-free zones. It asks whether and how these zones can be expanded. Panelists will also be invited to do a stocktaking of the new agreements between the USA and Russia and discuss steps that might be taken by other nuclear powers. The challenges associated with Iran and North Korea and prospects of the CTBT entering into force will also be debated.

Plenary session 2 (14.15–15.45)  Nuclear non-proliferation and export control
Growing interests in nuclear power pose new challenges to the international non-proliferation regime. This panel will examine the interface between nuclear power and nuclear weapons, addressing the rules of international nuclear commerce and export controls in particular.
