Sexual violence has been used by most if not all armed groups including the army during the war in the DR Congo from 1998 until 2003. This thesis discusses perspectives from the individual, the group and the macro level for motivations to commit such violence against civilians and opposing groups. The theoretical framework for discussion is development and gender perspectives in the DR Congo as well as the Liberian case. The second part of the thesis analyze the so-called success in Liberia after the civil wars from 1989 to 2003 in including focus on ending the use of sexual violence. The actual results from the international and national level are rather limited at the local level where the problem widely continues.
