The Norwegian Institute of International Affairs and ILOS, University of Oslo, have the pleasure of inviting you to a new seminar in our seminar series ‘New Russian Nationalism’:

Forging a Place in Russian National Identity: The Russian Orthodox Church as a Civic and Political Actor
The Russian Orthodox Church has been consolidating its place in post-Soviet society and culture through the expansion of its physical presence and development of a suitable social welfare role, alongside its pastoral efforts. At the same time, over the last decade or so, the civic and political role of the ROC has been maturing as the institution musters its resources in the service of building national identity. However, although it has often worked in tandem with the political authorities in this task – a pattern symbolized by the collaboration of Patriarch Kirill and Vladimir Putin in the 2012 presidential election – the Church’s goals are increasingly different from those of the regime in power.

There is emerging evidence of friction between the institutions of government and religion as they compete for dominance in some sectors of society. At present, the situation in Russia is one of ambivalence in the relationship between these two institutions. The resolution of this ambivalence will have a great influence on the nature of Russian national identity going forward, fundamentally shaping the configuration of the forces of secularization and democratization for the entire society.
