Seminar

The Norwegian Institute of International Affairs, NUPI, has the pleasure of inviting you to a seminar with Richard Gowan, Editor of the Annual Review of Global Peace Operations 2013
and Associate Director at the Center on International Cooperation, New York University. The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is a primary supporter of the Annual Review as part of its long-standing partnership with the Center on International Cooperation.

Peacekeeping missions and political missions have been at the center of international diplomacy over the last two years in cases ranging from Mali to Syria. The United Nations and its partners face growing demands to deploy hard-to-find troops, police and civilian crisis experts – and multilateral operations are increasingly targets for asymmetric attacks.  International policy-makers are looking for new ways to make operations more robust and effective, such as authorizing a UN brigade to attack militias in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and reinforcing African troops fighting in Somalia.  Yet it is often difficult to tie these military efforts to long-term political solutions.
