In this seminar, Mustafa Akyol, a Turkish political commentator and author, will present his new book “Islam Without Extremes – a Muslim Case for Liberty”. In this book Akoyl asks why a dominantly conservative brand of Islam nowadays is present in many governments or societies.He points to one exception; Turkey – where a nascent middle class is reinterpreting religion with a more modern mindset.

Islam Without Extremes – A Muslim Case for Liberty

Mustafa Akyol is a Turkish political commentator and author based in Istanbul. His book “Islam Without Extremes – a Muslim Case for Liberty”
 was long-listed for the 2012 Lioner Gelber Prize, along with other titles by famous authors such as Henry Kissinger, Francis Fukuyama and Niall Ferguson. In this book Akoyl asks why a dominantly conservative brand of Islam nowadays is present in many governments or societies.

He points to one exception; Turkey – where a nascent middle class is reinterpreting religion with a more modern mindset. He is also concerned with the many misperceptions about Islam that is dominant in the Western media.

NUPI has an ongoing project related to this topic called “Turkey as an Example for the Arab Spring”.
