The Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) flagship economic publication Asian Development Outlook 2017 (ADO) provides a comprehensive analysis of macroeconomic issues in developing Asia, including growth projections by country and region. Decades of rapid growth transformed developing Asia into a largely middle income region, but the pace of expansion has fallen off since the 2008 global financial crisis. This year’s ADO theme, ‘Transcending the Middle-Income Challenge’, explores the obstacles middle-income economies face to sustain healthy growth and offers policy advice to overcome them.

To present this year’s Asia Development Outlook, ADB Deputy Chief Economist Juzhong Zhuang will visit NUPI. During the seminar, he will address:

  • Economic prospects for developing Asia and the Pacific
  • Risks to the outlook from threats of protectionism
  • Implications of US monetary policy changes
  • Factors conducive to rapid growth in middle-income economies
  • Policy options for innovation, education, and infrastructure to spur middle income economies’ growth

The ADO presents an analysis of 45 economies, including the People’s Republic of China, India, and Indonesia. The report also examines the prospects for developing Asia by subregion:  Central Asia, East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific.

After an introduction by Deputy Minister Tone Skogen, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Juzhong Zhuang will present the ADO 2017.

Senior Research Fellow at NUPI Arne Melchior will comment the presentation. Chair is Senior Research Fellow Hans Jørgen Gåsemyr, University of Bergen/NUPI.

There will be a Q&A towards the end.
