Nigel Gould-Davies will talk about Russia's evolving position in the global economy, and the challenges and opportunities this presents for Russia and the West

Russian strength takes many forms, but its major weakness has always been the same: Russia has been the economically least developed of the major powers. This creates distinctive choices and dilemmas in domestic and foreign policy that successive regimes have sought to resolve in different ways.

This perspective illuminates President Putin’s ambitious strategy to fashion economic relations into instruments of influence, and throws into sharper relief the West’s use of sanctions in response. It offers insights too, into the way that China may use globalization to support its further rise.

This is what Dr Nigel Gould-Davies will talk about when he visits NUPI on 25 June. Dr Gould-Davies is an Associate Fellow at the Russia and Eurasia Programme at Chatham House. He is also teaching at Mahidol University in Thailand, and has previously held senior government relation roles in the international energy industry in Central Asia and Southeast Asia. Dr Gould-Davies is widely published on International Relations and Soviet/post-Soviet affairs. He received his BA and MPhil from Oxford University and his PhD from Harvard University.

Senior Research Fellow at NUPI Roman Vakulchuk will chair the event.

The event will be live streamed at NUPI's YouTube channel:
