A NEW EUROPE: WILL NORWAY BE LEFT OUT?

Europe is threatened from many sides, but is also undergoing a renewal to survive in a chaotic world. What will Norway's role in this new Europe be? Can we be left behind and outside the emerging Europe? In the first hour of this broadcast, we are looking into a new European solidarity and sovereignty, and we will discuss what a new President of the United States may have to say for transatlantic relations. Will Joe Biden be able to get the halting relationship between Europe and North America back on track? We also ask why we separate domestic and foreign policy.

The expert panel this hour consists of senior researcher in NUPI, Halvard Leira, NUPI Director Ulf Sverdrup, journalist and author Tove Gravdal and professor and researcher Marianne Riddervold from Innlandet University College and NUPI .

Presenter: Therese Leine, communications adviser at NUPI

NORWAY IN THE SECURITY COUNCIL: A CATWALK FOR INTERNATIONAL POLITICS?

Many cheered when the Norwegian election campaign at the UN gave Norway a seat on the Security Council. In January, it's our turn – for the fifth time – to take a seat around the horseshoe table in the UN building. But what exactly is our aim? Why did the government campaign so hard to get that seat? Are we merely seeking attention on the international stage or do we actually plan to get something done? We also explore what would happen if the veto powers in the Security Council were deprived of the right of veto? All these questions are answered by NUPI researchers Kari Osland and Niels  Nagelhus  Schia, and journalist and author Tove Gravdal. Ann-Kristin Kvilekval from the Norwegian Police Academy also joins, sharing her experiences from being on UN missions alone in the jungle in a country she did not know. She will also explain why it is so important that women are part of UN peace operations.

Presenter: Therese Leine, communications adviser at NUPI

THE WORLD AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE: WHAT NOW?

Why is climate policy so vulnerable to changes in politics and presidents? How ambitious is the new president of the United States, Joe Biden's green plan? And what will it take for him to succeed? In this broadcast, we first look into climate policy and the United States with the help of  NUPI researcher Guri Bang. We also talk to NORCAP Director Benedicte Giæver, who explains what specific measures are essential for farmers and others living in the exposed Sahel belt in Africa to be able to meet the consequences of climate change. Henrik Hallgrim Eriksen, head of the Norwegian climate negotiations, explains what the biggest challenges are around the negotiating table. And we ask NUPI researcher Hans Jørgen Gåsemyr: Is China really a climate star, or worst in class?

GREAT POWERS OF THE EAST, PART 1 - RUSSIA

What does nationalism look like in Russia? What is Russia emphasizing when depicting themselves as different than the West? What drives Russian foreign policy? How do the former Soviet republics relate to Russia today? How do we relate in Norway to Russia, and vice versa – and to what extent are attitudes problematic? In the first part of this broadcast, we take a closer look at Russian domestic and foreign policy with NUPI researchers Helge Blakkisrud and Julie Wilhelmsen, and swipe by some of the former Soviet republics along with author Erika Fatland.

Presenter: Ane Teksum Isbrekken, communications adviser, NUPI

GREAT POWERS OF THE EAST, PART 2 – CHINA

Do we really have anything to fear from China? Who exactly is the country's president, Xi Jinping? And is there, as some writers have argued, a real danger of war when one great power grows and pushes another — in this case, the United States? In this broadcast you will meet NUPI researchers Henrik Stålhane Hiim and Morten Skumsrud Andersen, and author and Morgenbladet editor Sun Heidi Sæbø, who published a book about China and President Xi Jinping last year.

Presenter: Ane Teksum Isbrekken, communications adviser, NUPI

Thursday 10.12, 09:00-10:00

THE THREAT FROM TECHNOLOGY – HOW TO BE SAFE IN CYBERSPACE?

When thousands of thieves feel your door handle every day: How to make sure they don't get in? Companies based in democratic countries sell surveillance technology to authoritarian regimes – should we do something about it? And what exactly was the reason why Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Søreide in the autumn of 2020 chose to point a very public finger at Russia after the data breach in the Norwegian parliament (Stortinget)? In the first hour of this broadcast we take a closer look at these questions together with NUPI researchers Karsten Friis and Lars Gjesvik, Håkon Bergsjø from the National Security Authority (NSM) and Dan Vigeland from KnowIt.

These are among the questions we ask to the expert panel in this section of the broadcast, which consists of NUPI researcher Stein Sundstøl Eriksen, head of research at NUPI Ole Jacob Sending and researcher Cathrine Thorleifsson from UiO's Centre for Extremism Research (C-rex).

MIDDLE EAST AND ARAB SPRING

It is now ten years since Tunisian vegetable trader Mohammed Bouazizi set himself on fire and died in protest against the government. Many recognized bouazizi's life situation, and eventually the uprising spread across borders and across the Middle East. But ten years after the Arab Spring, it is clear that far from all the dreams that drove it have been fulfilled. We speak to someone who grew up in Syria about the motivations behind the demonstrations, with Sidsel Wold standing in the midst of the hopeful and bloody protests, and two of Norway's foremost Middle East scholars. They paint a picture of what the Middle East was before and what it looks like today, before trying to look into the future: Will there be a new spring in the Middle East?

Participants: Sverre Lodgaard, Senior Researcher and former director of NUPI, Kjetil Selvik, Senior Researcher, NUPI, Zeina Bali, General Manager, SPACE and from Syria, Sidsel would, journalist, NRK.

Presenter: Rikke Agerup, communications adviser, NUPI
