COP27 marks the 30th anniversary of the UNFCCC. During those thirty years the climate governance landscape has evolved from mainly being centered around the UNFCCC, towards a myriad of climate initiatives. Such initiatives take place between states and non-states actors, inside and outside of the formal UNFCCC process.  Alongside this shift we see an increasing tension between the liberal trade order and unilateral/minilateral climate action, exemplified by the EU carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM).

With COP27 as the backdrop this seminar will discuss key questions such as progress within the climate negotiations; mechanisms to accelerate domestic ambitions; potential synergies between UNFCCC and non-UNFCCC processes and how increasing geopolitical rivalry between China and the US may impact international climate politics.  Our invited speakers will give the audience insight into the context of global climate policy, most up-to-date outcomes of the negotiation process, as well as the prospects of Europe’s leadership in global climate policy, and the Nordic countries’ ambitious role within the European family. 

This seminar is a collaboration between Linköping University, Stockholm University, The Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI) and the Norwegian Institution of Foreign Affairs (NUPI). The seminar is funded by the Swedish Energy Agency.
