Peacebuilding involves reforming and strengthening government institutions after a conflict.
How can we prevent conflicts, deal with them and promote post-conflict recovery? NUPI’s work on peacebuilding is closely tied to peace operations. Peacebuilding involves reforming and strengthening institutions like the legislative, judicial and executive branches of government. This is also often called statebuilding. At NUPI, research in this field builds on extensive fieldwork that can provide important insights into conflict transformation and help peacebuilding processes at the local, national, regional and international levels.
Research topics within the field of peacebuilding include:
• How can societies emerging from conflict avoid relapse?
• What is the role of civil society in peacebuilding? What of the relations between state and society?
• How to promote reconciliation among groups that have been in conflict?
