Chinese tech giants are increasingly visible and established in the European market. Are we ready for all that this implies?

Tech giants like Xiaomi, Huawei, ZTE, Baidu and WeChat have become well established names all over the world. Some of them are competing to build 5G networks in Europe. At the same time, some of these companies have been associated with state-sponsored espionage and accused of facilitating authoritarianism. How should European authorities understand and face this development?

Valentin Weber will talk about this when he visits NUPI on February 6th. He believes it is useful to look at the Chinese security landscape to answer these questions.

  • Listen to the NUPI podcast from this seminar:

Valentin Weber is a PhD student in cyber security and affiliated researcher at the Centre for Technology and Global Affairs, Oxford University. He is also an OTF Senior Fellow in Information Control at Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society, Harvard University. Weber's research interests include how the cyber domain changes conflicts and state strategies. His current research focuses on the integration of cyber strategy, and the role of information control has in state strategies. He has previously worked for the International Security Department at Chatham House.

The seminar is hosted by NUPI's Centre for Cyber Security Studies, and senior adviser at NUPI Karsten Friis will moderate the event.
