NUPI · AUKUS and its implications for Asia, US-European relations and non-proliferation

The AUKUS security partnership between Australia, the US and UK may have far-reaching implications for the future strategic balance in Asia, where both NATO and Europe have strong interests. Most importantly, through the partnership, the US and UK will provide Australia the technology to build nuclear-powered submarines. What does this new partnership mean for the security situation in Asia and the great power rivalry with China? What might the implications be for US-European relations? And what does it mean for nuclear non-proliferation?

Bruno Tertrais is Deputy Director of the Fondation pour la Recherche Stratégique (Foundation for Strategic Research, FRS), a leading French think-tank on international security issues. His areas of expertise include geopolitics and international relations, strategic and military affairs, nuclear deterrence and non-proliferation, US policy and transatlantic relations, security in the Middle East and in Asia.
