Morten Skumsrud Andersen’s research centres on topics in historical international relations - particularly questions of hierarchies and empires - and analyses of concepts, with an overarching interest in questions of social theory and philosophies of science. He has also worked on contemporary statebuilding and international organisations.

Andersen completed his PhD project at the London School of Economics (LSE) entitled “A Genealogy of the Balance of Power – Its Uses and Effects” in 2016. Here, he examines the history behind as well as the contextual and practical uses of the concept “Balance of Power” amongst policy makers and in the public sphere from the early-modern period until today.
