President of Estonia on cyber security

What does Estonia see as the most pressing challenges to the global stability of cyber space?

Estonia's President, Ms. Kersti Kaljulaid, visited NUPI on October 16. Estonia is on the global forefront in digitalization, e-government and cyber security.

Here, President Kaljulaid talks with Senior Research Fellow Niels Nagelhus Schia, head of NUPI's Cyber Security Centre, about Estonia's perspectives on cyber security and the security benefits and challenges related to Estonia as a digital state:

The historical trajectory of Estonia puts the country in a unique position to understand the most important security policy challenges in Europe today.

The country was occupied by the Soviet Union under World War II, restored independence in 1991, and is as one of the Baltic states now a NATO and EU member.

This experience, in combination with the geographical location next to Russia, the Estonian focus on digitalization, cyber security, and how to approach hybrid security threats are of high importance and interest to the Nordic countries and Europe.

In this way Estonia is a key player in Europe’s relationship with Russia and in developing a security policy on this topic.
