An urgent call for regional cooperation and adaptation in Central Asia

Central Asia faces severe climate threats. In this newly published book, experts highlight what the region must take into account when tackling these issues.

The current state of climate change in Central Asia

This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the current state of climate change in Central Asia, its impacts, and the region's preparedness to tackle these challenges. It also emphasises the need for further and broader research to facilitate informed policy decisions by governments and local communities.

The book opens with an introduction by Rahat Sabyrbekov, Indra Øverland, and Roman Vakulchuk, and then moves on to an in-depth exploration of the growing threat to Central Asia from climate change by Anne Sophie Daloz, followed by Alisher Mirzabaev's assessment of the current situation and future perspectives of climate science and policy in the region.

Central Asian Decarbonisation Pathways and Carbon Pricing

The book's next section dives into the region's decarbonisation pathways and carbon pricing, featuring Rahat Sabyrbekov, Indra Øverland, and Roman Vakulchuk's analysis of Central Asian climate policy pledges under the Paris Agreement, and a study of decarbonisation opportunities and emerging carbon pricing instruments by Gulim Abdi, Nurkhat Zhakiyev, and Shynar Toilybayeva.

Energy transition in Central Asia

The focus then shifts to energy transition in Central Asia, with a systematic literature review by Burulcha Sulaimanova, Indra Øverland, Rahat Sabyrbekov, and Roman Vakulchuk, followed by Morena Skalamera's exploration of Central Asia in the post-oil world and Yana Zabanova's analysis of energy transition in the region's hydrocarbon-producing countries.

Local Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation in Central Asia

Next, the book explores local climate change impacts and adaptation in Central Asia, with Suzy Blondin writing about the relationship between human mobility and climate change in the region, while Karina Standal, Anne Sophie Daloz and Elena Kim introduce a gendered approach to understanding climate change impacts in rural Kyrgyzstan.
