Covid-19 is a major global crisis. The pandemic is a health crisis, and globally more than 350 000 people has died and almost 6 million have been infected. The closing of the economy has also brought a severe economic downturn and upheaval. Unemployment is increasing, and the IMF is warning that this is the biggest economic crisis since the Great depression in the late 1920s. We are also witnessing a considerable pressure on national and international institutions. Both rich and poorer countries have been hit hard, but in the future the poorer population of the world will be especially vulnerable. WHO recently declared South America as the new epicentre of the pandemic, and although the African continent until now has had less spread of the disease than other places in the world, the number of infected people is also increasing rapidly here.

At this webinar we will ask the following questions:

  1. What are the most important challenges for developing countries in the light of Covid-19?
  2. What will these changes and effects mean for international and Norwegian development policies?
  3. In what ways can countries such as Norway contribute to facing the pandemic?

To discuss these questions, Minister of International Development Dag-Inge Ulstein, Professor Andy Sumner (King’s College, London) and Director for Forum for Development and Environment (ForUM), Kathrine Sund-Henriksen will engage in a conversation with NUPI Director Ulf Sverdrup.

The event will be held on the Microsoft Teams Live Event platform. Here is a short video on how to use the platform.
