In August 2021, the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan. Two years on, the country faces enormous challenges. Afghanistan is in the midst of a humanitarian crisis and terrorist groups such as Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) continue to use the country as sanctuary. The Taliban has faced international condemnation for their human rights violations, in particular their recent ban on female NGO workers and limits on education for women. But the largest threat to stability in Afghanistan is perhaps the Taliban regime’s own, internal power struggles.

In this webinar, Hassan Abbas discusses the Taliban’s internal ruptures, how they affect the Taliban’s ability to rule effectively, and what they might mean for the future of Afghanistan.

The webinar is led by Anne Likuski and hosted by the Consortium for Research on Terrorism and International Crime.

The webinar will be held on the platform Microsoft Teams and lasts from 15:00 to 16:00 CEST.

Hassan Abbas is Distinguished Professor of International Relations at the Near East South Asia Strategic Studies Centre (NESA), National Defense University in Washington DC. He serves as a Senior Advisor and Bernard Schwartz Fellow at Asia Society. His current research work focuses on building narratives for countering political and religious extremism & rule of law reforms in developing states. He is the author of The Return of the Taliban: Afghanistan after the Americans Left (Yale University Press, 2023).
