India is the world’s largest democracy, a major emerging economy and an increasingly influential voice in global governance. It has a long history at the United Nations as a leading voice in the Non-Aligned Movement and as one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping operations. At the same time, multilateral institutions are under pressure from geopolitical rivalry, reform debates and shifting coalitions. How do these developments affect India´s multilateral position, and what role is India playing today in different multilateral bodies?
NUPI invites you to a seminar on India in the multilateral system, where a new report published by NUPI will be discussed.
At the seminar, Research Professors Cedric de Coning, Stein Sundstøl Eriksen and Ole Jacob Sending, will present the main findings from the report. The presentation will be followed by comments from Head of the Asia Programme and Senior Analyst at the Swedish Institute of International affairs, Henrik Chetan Aspengren.
The seminar will address questions such as:
- How has India’s approach to multilateral institutions evolved in recent years?
- How does India navigate between great-power competition and its role in the Global South?
- In what areas is India seeking to reform or reshape multilateral rules and institutions?
- What are the implications for how to engage India on multilateral issues?
