Theory seminar: Theorising territorial passions
The president of the United States wants to annex Greenland. He has also spoken about making Canada the 51st state of the United States. Further, the president of the largest territorial state in the world, Vladimir Putin, is four years into a war to acquire more territory for the country from its neighbour Ukraine. Meanwhile, China has expanded its maritime territorial claims by building artificial islands and threatens to invade and incorporate Taiwan into its own territory.
Why are great powers in the grip of territorial expansionist ideologies and passions? This talk reviews the different expressions of territorial expansionism today and examines the leading explanations for the emergence and evolution of this puzzling state behaviour.
