Kristian Lundby Gjerde is a Senior Research Fellow in the Research group for Eastern Europe and Asia, specializing in post-Soviet, in particular Russian, politics. He has studied international relations in Russia and holds a Master degree in Russian studies from St Antony’s College, Oxford, and a PhD in political science from the University of Oslo.

Sex workers, wives, soldiers, and spies: Representations of Russians in Norwegian media 1992–2023
This article analyses the changing ways in which Russians – and Russia – have been represented in a major Norwegian newspaper, VG , since the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Theoretically, the article rests on the premises of social constructivism and the concepts of ‘othering’ through articulation of subject positions and symbolic boundaries. Applying a mixed-methods approach, the study explores both the changing thematic landscape and the evolving positioning of Russians in the newspaper’s reporting, zooming in on two dominant positions – Russians as pitiful and Russians as dangerous. Conceptualizing Russia as a ‘significant other’ to Norway, the article discusses how representations of Russians between 1992 and 2023 reflect shifting ideas about asymmetries between the two countries. It shows how, in VG ’s coverage, Russians have been transformed from occupying a position of economic inferiority to one of moral inferiority.

Will a more humble NATO be a stronger NATO?
NATO’s narrative about itself has changed. However, this narrative is unlikely to gain much support elsewhere in the world, claim the authors of this op-ed in Aftenposten. NATO turns 75 and describes itself as "the world’s most successful military alliance". Like all other viable international actors, NATO must be able to look itself in the mirror and critically reflect on its own actions to maintain legitimacy both among its own populations and in the wider world, and, if necessary, adjust its course. This article, based on a longer analysis published in the journal Contemporary Security Policy, is an attempt to contribute to this reflection.
