In this seminar Håvard Haugstvedt will present the findings from his recent study on radicalisation among people with a military background.

In this seminar we take a closer look at the potential threat of military personnel who might get radicalised toward extremist violent acts. Håvard Haugstvedt will present potential risk factors in the extremist radicalisation of military personnel through a comparison of extremists with and without a military background, how the military address extremism among veterans and the latest figures from the U.S Capitol riot investigations.

The seminar will be followed by a Q&A session.

Discussant and moderator is Tore Bjørgo. This event is organised by the Consortium for Research on Terrorism and International Crime.

Håvard Haugstvedt is a researcher at Center for Research on Extremism (C-REX) at the University of Oslo. His research focuses on youth and extremism in Norway, counter-terrorism and militant groups use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). In 2021, Haugstvedt successfully defended his PhD thesis entitled:  «Managing the tension between trust and security: A qualitative study of Norwegian social workers’ experience with preventing radicalisation and violent extremism”.
