The EU and China just celebrated 50 years of formal diplomatic relations. The rather muted celebration came as the global system is going through historical changes, and both China and Europe are struggling to adjust their relationship under the second Trump presidency. In particular, the increasing overlap between geopolitics and economic relations raises a set of new questions about one of the world’s most important trade relationships.

In times of upheaval, it pays to look at the long historical trends, and this discussion of the Europe-China relationship will start with a presentation of a new book by Bjørnar Sverdrup-Thygeson on China-Europe relations from the 1840s till today; The Identity Factor in Chinese Relations with Europe: China and the Barbarian Civilization.

With comments from Astrid Nordin, the book discussion centers on the role of Europe in shaping China’s political identity throughout history, and how a more confident Beijing is now engaging with the EU and European countries.

The event is co-hosted by the project ANGER and The Norwegian Centre for Geopolitics (GEOPOL). It is held at NUPI, Rosenkrantz’ gate 22, Oslo. A light breakfast will be served from 08:30. It will also be live streamed to NUPI’s YouTube channel. No registration needed for digital participation.
