Violent extremism continues to pose a serious challenge to sustainable peace and development, particularly in fragile and conflict-affected settings exposed to compounding pressures such as inequality, climate change, and weak governance. Experience across different regions demonstrates that security-driven responses alone are not enough to address the complex and adaptive nature of extremist threats. Therefore, more comprehensive approaches are needed – ones that tackle the underlying drivers of violence.
The new book, Resilience, Peacebuilding, and Preventing Violent Extremism: A Complex Systems Perspective on Sustaining Peace is the result of a three-year research project led by the Japan International Cooperation Association (JICA) Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development. NUPI has been a close partner in the project, and Kari Osland and Cedric de Coning have contributed to the publication.
The book presents an integrated framework for preventing and countering violent extremism that places social cohesion, resilience, and peacebuilding at its core. While recognizing the continued importance of security measures, it emphasizes long-term prevention and the strengthening of societal resilience.
At this seminar launching the book in Norway, we will bring together the contributing authors to discuss how resilient peacebuilding approaches can be translated into practice and how efforts to prevent violent extremism can be adapted to complex and dynamic environments.
